Hardest 5-Letter Words to Guess

A ranked list of genuinely tricky 5-letter words — the ones with no standard vowels, rare letters, or double letters that trip up word-game players every time.

The hardest 5-letter words to guess

In a letter-guessing game, three things make a word hard: it hides its vowels, it uses a rare letter (Q, X, Z, J), or it repeats a letter in a way you wouldn’t expect. Here are some of the hardest 5-letter words to guess, ranked roughly by how often they trip people up.

  1. NYMPH — no A, E, I, O, or U at all. The Y does all the work.
  2. GLYPH — same trick as NYMPH: zero standard vowels.
  3. CRYPT — another vowel-less word; the Y is easy to miss.
  4. LYNCH — looks like it should have an I, but doesn’t.
  5. MYRRH — no standard vowel, plus a double R at the end.
  6. WALTZ — one of the few common words ending in Z.
  7. JAZZY — rare starting letter J, plus a double Z.
  8. FIZZY — double Z again, easy to guess the pattern but not the word.
  9. DIZZY — same double-Z family as FIZZY.
  10. UNZIP — a Z buried in the middle, not the start.
  11. FJORD — only one vowel, and J right after F throws people off.
  12. EPOXY — rare X, and the Y at the end isn’t obviously a vowel stand-in.
  13. IVORY — common word, uncommon letter shape for a guess.
  14. IONIC — three vowels in a row is rarer than it sounds.

Want to put these to the test? Our daily word game doesn’t use letter-position guessing like this — it ranks your guesses by meaning instead — but the same instinct for uncommon words helps either way.
